Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) I, II, III (non-exempt position)

Facility: Regional Core Laboratory, Hospital Division Laboratory

Reports to: Department Lab Manager

Position Summary:

Clinical Laboratory Scientists for Pacific Diagnostic Laboratory (PDL) are responsible for performing standard tests to obtain data used in diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Goals of Position:

  • Conduct accurate and timely testing of specimens.
  • Maintain quality control of testing and test assessment.

Essential Job Results:

  • Complete required continuing education for licensure. Maintain own technical checklist. Take initiative for planning and completing professional development as it applies to laboratory goals, system goals, and personal/professional goals. Participate in cross-training for tests and/or analyzers to improve technical flexibility. Facilitate meeting laboratory goals and system goals by sharing information obtained through professional development activities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA). Monitor the appropriateness and acceptability of test results. Participate with CAP proficiency surveys. Follow guidelines necessary for regulatory compliance and participates in preparation for inspection by various accrediting agencies. Complete required competency evaluations. Attend and complete all mandatory continuing education in-services.
  • Effectively communicate with team members in order to complete assigned tasks. Organize and prioritize duties as needed. Able to work as a team player in regard to workstation, shift, and schedule needs to best serve laboratory and health system goals. Organize time to prioritize, perform, and complete assigned tasks in order to meet lab-wide needs and deadlines. Demonstrate initiative by taking a lead role when appropriate.
  • Maintain technical competency, flexibility, and accuracy in assigned areas. Properly utilize the LIS for inquiry, specimen requirements, and patient results. Demonstrate appropriate use of medical supplies, reagents, test kits, controls, and calibration material. Accurately and consistently evaluate, resolve, and document quality control (QC) data. Demonstrate general problem solving including follow-through on identified problems and documentation of corrective action. Participate with instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Participate with the training of students and/or employees by either giving lectures or providing training in-services. Participate in the evaluation of new tests, methods, or instrumentation. Participate in writing and/or updating procedure manuals and technical checklists. Participate in system-wide efforts to improve service and quality.
  • Provide customer service in a professional and caring manner. Maintain the highest standards of conduct in hospitality, excellence, appearance, attitude, and respect. Use best judgment in all interactions with clients (patients, family, coworkers, medical staff and others). Maintain confidentiality with information and data within the scope of the position. BA/BS in Science or Biology.


MT (ASCP) Certification preferred.


California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Licensure and experience has been validated and has been deemed qualified under the guidelines of the State of California and CLIA to perform clinical laboratory tests and examinations classified as waived, moderate or high complexity as described under CLIA.


Level 1. Recent graduates of approved schools of clinical laboratory science, individuals re-entering the field, and individuals who may not meet all the required qualifications of Level II.

Level II. Individuals with more experience than Level I, as well the ability to teach students and trainees and have troubleshooting capabilities. Level II may provide some work direction for non-licensed personnel and check tests for accuracy, reliability and validity before results are reported from the laboratory.

Level III. Individuals who have mastery beyond Levels I and II and maintain a high level of clinical expertise in a subsection of a specific clinical department. They will check tests performed for accuracy, reliability, and validity before results are reported from the laboratory. They will be responsible for the maintenance of acceptable levels of quality assurance and performance for methods within their specialty area and will be the technical resource for their specific specialty.

Functional experience with common laboratory analyzers and laboratory computer systems including experience with QC and troubleshooting.

· Involves some extended periods of standing and walking.
