Codes and abstracts diseases and procedures for accurate administrative and clinic data and optimal hospital reimbursement, utilizing coding guidelines as set forth in Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM and CPT Assistant for CPT/HCPCS. Assists with internal coding audit and training activities.

 

Codes diseases and procedures abstracted from the medical record according to ICD-9-

CM and CPT classification systems, utilizing only recognized coding guidelines.

Abstracts data for coding utilizing the entire medical record in accordance with approved

coding guidelines.

Validates coding to assure proper DRG/APC assignment.

Enters codes and abstracted data into the Hospital Information System.

Analyzes OSHPD error report data and initiates necessary corrections.

Participates in the coder training program by providing assistance to the Coder I and Coder

II staff members.

Participates in quality improvement activities by identifying specific cases and pertinent

Data as requested.

Communicates with physicians concerning incomplete documentation and clarification of

diagnoses/procedures utilizing appropriate facility query process.

 

 

Qualifications:

 LEVEL OF EDUCATION

 

Minimum: Formalized education that provides knowledge and experience in the following areas: 1) Assigning ICD-9-CM and CPT coding classifications in an acute care setting; 2) UHDDS reporting requirements; 3) Medical terminology, anatomy, chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and disease process

 

Preferred: Associates Degree Health Information Management

 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS


Minimum: CCS

Preferred: CCS and RHIT or RHIA

 

YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE

 

Minimum: 5 Years

Preferred: 7 Years
